whose first name is yaz? :P

not to be picky, but some people would also think of hank greenberg, with hank. change it to henry and it can be added to the list. yogi, willie, and the mick were mentioned.

i wouldn't include lou either. my first thought was actually lou brock. joe could be joe jackson. imo the ones i mentioned, there's really only 1 person people could possibly think of. time for a new topic i suppose for the mets fans.

CG: 73 (that's right. 73 starts and 73 complete games. pitchers today are pussys. they don't condition their arms like they used to)

Actually Old Hoss threw underhand from a distance of 45 feet in 1884. His other claim to fame was this photo:

He's the guy in the upper left flipping the bird.


Big Ed Walsh in 1908 is the the all time leader in innings pitched in a season since the mound was moved to its current 60 feet 6 inch distance (464). He also won 40 games that year.

haha, the ones with no mustache probably couldn't grow facial hair. i'm sure the non-mustached didn't garner much respect amongst teammates.

never read that book you mention but it sounds like a fun read. if you ever get off your lazy keister and decide to read it, let me know if it's worth the time.

There is actually 2 teams pictured together in this 1886 opening day photo. The left side with the gray hats are the Boston Beaneaters, and the right side players in white are the NY Giants.

The player to the right of the guy in the top hat is John Montgomery (Monte) Ward, the last National League pitcher to throw a perfect game prior to Jim Bunning in 1964 (Ward in 1880).

Did you know that James (Pud) Galvin, another great pitcher from the era was the first ball player to use performance enhancing drugs? He used to inject himself with monkey testosterone between games.

did you know babe ruth used to put a piece of cold lettuce under his cap to keep him cool, that he would change every 2 innings?

Thinking of Lou Gehrig, but Lou Brock's not too shabby either. Also was thinking of Carl Yastrzemski, referred to by some as Yaz. Henry or Hank, it's Aaron. And there's only one Joltin' Joe.
